Aloe Vera Latex

Introduction : From the two components of the aloe plant that are used medicinally, is a bitter yellow latex exudate, produced by cells just under the skin of an aloe leaf. This is known as drug aloes and is an irritant laxative. Drug aloes was introduced to India by the Arabs; to treat constipation.

Description of Aloe Latex : The Organic aloe vera latex, is taken from specialized cells along the inner leaf skin called the pericyclic tubules. The latex is extracted as a liquid, then dried into a yellow powder. Because it's such a potent laxative, the latex is not usually used alone but combined with gentler herbs, such as cascara sagrada.

Action of some of the important chemicals of Aloe Vera Latex :

• The yellow liquid is aloin, is used medicinally for its stimulating effect on bowels and increasing the intestinal water content by opening chloride channels of the colonic membrane to cause a net reduction of liquid absorption by the colon. It is also a skin irritant and is not suitable for skin care.

• The presence of Aloin and Aloetic acid in the Aloe Vera gives an antibiotic effect to it.

• Aloe emodin that is found in aloe vera is bactericidal.

• Cinnamic acid found in aloe vera is a germicide.

• Bradykinase, also found in aloe vera is an enzyme that stimulates the immune system.

• Acemannan, a mucopolysaccharide found in aloe vera stimulates macrophages to produce interferon and interleukin.
  

Indication : Aloe Vera latex is used to treat mild to morderate constipation.

Precaution : Persons taking the medications for antidiabetic, diuretics, digoxin should consult their physician while taking aloe vera latex.
